Ferdinand Hodler

Ferdinand Hodler, March 14, 1853–May 19, 1918, was a Swiss painter. He trained first with the landscape painter Ferdinand Sommer in Thun and, from 1872 to 1877, studied with Barthélemy Menn at the Geneva School of Drawing, where he encountered French painting.

Hodler became a leading figure in Swiss art and helped establish a modern national style. His work was associated with Symbolism and with the Geneva artistic circle, including poet Louis Duchosal, who introduced him to Symbolist writing and ideas.

His paintings are held by major public collections including the Kunstmuseum Bern, Kunstmuseum Basel, Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid
