Georges de La Tour
Georges de La Tour, March 13, 1593–January 30, 1652, was a French painter born in Vic-sur-Seille in the Duchy of Lorraine. The son of a baker, he is documented as a painter by 1616 and established himself in Lunéville around 1620.
Little is known about his formal artistic education or teachers. A proposed period of study in Rome remains unsupported by documentary evidence. His son Étienne was also a painter and assisted him in the family workshop.
La Tour worked for the dukes of Lorraine, local nobility, and religious institutions. In 1639, Louis XIII appointed him ordinary painter to the king. His paintings are now held by major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, the National Gallery of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Kimbell Art Museum.
