Pieter Bruegel the Elder, c 1525–1530 – September 9, 1569, was a Netherlandish painter and draftsman. His birthplace and early training are uncertain; he became a master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1551 and traveled in Italy soon afterward.
Bruegel worked in Antwerp as a designer of prints for the publisher Hieronymus Cock before moving to Brussels in 1563. He produced landscapes, religious subjects, allegories, and scenes of peasant life, and his sons Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder continued the family’s artistic career.
Bruegel died in Brussels in 1569. His works are held by the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Louvre, Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, and other major collections.
